The WPA Artistic Pool Division held yet another championship event at the very upscale Jamaica Joe’s Billiards Bar & Cafe in Midwest City, OK. The Artistic Pool Masters Championship started on Friday, September 22nd and finished on Sunday, September 24th. Jamaica Joe’s recently finished a new expansion to the building, adding 3 new 9-foot Diamond tables and a new 12-foot heated Star snooker table. In the first match Mark Dimick (“Dr. Popper” from OK) defeated Curtis Robertson (“The Redneck Cue Guy” from Abilene, Texas) 66 to 55. The semi-finals revealed Jason Lynch (“The Michigan Kid” from MI) defeating Abram Diaz (“Too Tall” from CA) 88 to 77 and William DeYonker (“The Gentleman” from MI) besting Mark Dimick 80 to66. The finals showcased the consistent skills of “The Gentleman” versus the power stroke of “The Michigan Kid” with William taking the match over Jason by a score of 93 to 77. Congratulations to William for his 3rd win at Jamaica Joes and to Jason for a well-fought 2nd place finish. 3rd place went to Abram, 4th place to Mark and 5th place to Curtis. The discipline medal winners were: William DeYonker Trick / Fancy (39 of 40), Bank / Kick (37 of 40), Stroke (37 of 40), and Masse (30 of 40); Jason Lynch (39 of 40) in Draw; Mark Dimick with 2 “perfect” scores (40 of 40 in both Follow and Jump); and Brian Pauley (37 of 40) in Special Arts. The medal for sportsmanship was awarded to Stacy Mendrick (TX) based on player voting. On Friday night the WPA Artistic Pool Division hosted a charity benefit with the always-popular speed pool tournament, that was open to anyone wanting to take the challenge. Sixteen players competed and experienced a fun-filled time as everyone at Jamaica Joe’s enjoyed watching the competition for a great charity named 10
Strong...for mothers and families of children with cancer. On Saturday evening a special Artistic Pool free-style event took place during an entertainment show, in honor of fellow artistic pool play Ben Zeman, who passed away earlier this year. We would like to thank McDermott cues for a beautiful cue and case to raffle for 10 strong. $555 was raised for the charity from the raffle and speed pool tournament. A extra special thanks to Jamaica Joe’s, Jessica Finch Massey, KC Massey, and the very helpful and friendly staff at Jamaica Joe’s. We look forward to coming back again in the future.
